It will slowly cause the depopulation of different kinds of flora and fauna. In China, these activities of eating inner organs of animals such as tiger or bear and they even use these animals’ body parts for economic purposes such as tiger skin, crocodile skin and elephant teeth and asks by exporting it to those who pay a high price for it. This has a serious effect on the ecosystem which is the extinction of animals. In Indonesia, trees are being cut down for making expensive house furniture made of material such as teak wood. In fact, these trees require a long period of 10 to 20 years to mature. Thus, the continuous cutting down of trees will eventually lead to its extinction. These activities are illegal by law and still occurs widely despite many countermeasures that have been taken by the authorized organizations such as World Wildlife Fund (WFM). Somehow, these criminals are able to slip through the organization’s enforcement laws of protecting the wildlife and nature. Plus, most society are careless to even take notice of these problems because they have yet to come to awareness of the dangers that would happen from these illegal acts. If only they had given more attention and cooperation to the authorized organizations, these problems might have been able to be prevented. Lastly, to survive in this modern world, every person needs to be able to make a living for themselves of their family, but many people with low education level cannot get high salary jobs, even university scholars are yet to be certain of getting a proper job after their graduation despite their high level of education. The competition is just like the survival of the fittest among these graduates and people with low qualifications. Therefore with the growing demand for more natural materials such as petroleum gas and minerals from the earth as well as a high demand of smuggled goods, people are willing to pay high prices to have employees do their job of exploiting tauter because these jobs are high risk. So people that are desperately in need of jobs are usually tempted with the pay and they would take up the call. This situation had opened up a lot of job opportunities, but they are careless to not realism that these jobs are the main cause of nature’s destruction because they are being pinned down by the pressure of high living cost in this modern world that they have forgotten the importance of preserving nature. In a nutshell, still strongly believe in my opinion that nature’s destruction is mainly caused by man’s careless attitude. They strive to make a living in the world so desperately that some eventually deny the truth that it is their own fault for nature’s destruction. If no serious and proper actions are being taken immediately by many wildlife and nature preserving organizations or authorized organizations such as WFM, UNESCO and SEAN to prepare an effective strategy or blueprint to prevent this problem, there probably won’t be any jungles or wildlife left in the future and our young generator will have to live in a polluted world.

College Ghost Lore If one were to take the beltway to I-270 north, about an hour north of Washington, DC one would arrive at a town called Emmitsburg, Maryland. Is the town haunted? I collected several stories from a senior in college who is from Emmitsburg. This senior is a white female. The stories I collected, many of which have to do with the small Catholic college indicate a rich ghost lore in the town. There are several stories that this woman told me concerning her hometown. The first is one that most people who live in the town know. In the mid 1800s, a man by the name Larry was born. Larry was the son of a famous composer and musician and came to teach music at the college. His father wanted Larry to be a musician like himself; however Larry was not as skilled. Larry became popular with the college students who would come to his grocery store where he would sing songs for the pretty girls. In the late 1800s, his father died, and Larry was quite sad. The following Christmas, Larry took his flute and went to the cemetery at Mount Saint Mary’s College to play one of his father’s most famous pieces, â€Å"When the Glory Lit the Midnight Air†. The town folk thought he finally mastered the ability to play the flute to honor his father. So the town folk went up to the gravesite by the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes on the campus. The event became a tradition, and La rry would lead the people up to the gravesite each Christmas to play the flute. In the 1920s Larry died. One of the earliest presidents of the school was Reverend Simon Brute. He died in the mid 1800s. Brute still glides about the campus wearing long black robes. People who have seen his ghost describe the same sunken cheeks and other particular features. He usually smiles and nods and moves on. In Brute Hall is the room that Brute once lived in. Room 252 is supposedly still haunted by his ghost.

Multilingual Education Essay

In the long years of educating children, the school and the curriculum designed to use Filipino and English as a medium of instruction. Although English is a foreign language, we use it to serve as our language especially communicating and expressing ideas. By using it, we are being globally competitive that we can align in other countries. And to show also that we are not behind among the competitive countries worldwide in the field of education. Filipinos were considered smart and flexible as we can easily learn foreign language. However in the long time of using it, not all may have the skill to understand and speak it. Those other children could not express their ideas freely because they find it difficult. Sometimes it leads them to have a low self-esteem. One of the changes in Basic Education Curriculum brought about by the new K-12 program is the introduction of Mother Tongue- Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) specifically in Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2 and 3 to support the goal of â€Å" Every Child- A- Reader and A –Writer† by Grade 1.† Multilingual Education typically refers to â€Å"first-language-first† education that is, schooling which begins in the mother tongue and transitions to additional languages. It is meant to address the high functional illiteracy of Filipinos where language plays a significant factor. Every area has different lingua franca, the most common language in an area. Mother tongue means we are using the language in our community. The language you already heard and used by the people around. It’s the language that was used in daily conversation with the family and neighborhood. We use our own dialect as we say. During kindergarten and Grade One the child starts to learn how to read. During this stage, they struggle to learn reading. Not all are fast learners; some are poor because they could hardly recognize words especially in English. In this stage they need follow up in school and at home. Many children are found to be poor-readers and having difficulty to comprehend stories and paragraph. That is the common problem in school. A child who suffers this situation became passive and doesn’t want to go to school anymore. When the teacher is having a discussion, a child will not participate and afraid to commit mistakes in answering because they don’t know how to express their answer. The mother tongue was implemented because many children are not comfortable using foreign language as medium of instruction. A child could not express an idea if it is in English because other children find difficulty to use it. Mother Tongue will serve as a foundation to learn Filipino and English easily. Starting kindergarten, the children will use mother tongue. They will learn their lesson using stories, poems, illustrations based on their local culture. Learning will be continuous to the child as they use their own language. They will express ideas freely and have confidence within themselves. It is easy for them to construct sentences, make paragraphs as they identify the terms use. Easy to converse and recite because the words use are familiar and they use it every day. They would count numbers, sing songs, recite poems in the language use in the community. Understanding occurs instantly in them. Studies show that students learn better when taught in their native language than in a foreign tongue. Through the use of the mother tongue, it will develop their reasoning skills and higher thinking skills of the students. Pupils can easily express their different views and ideas during class discussion. Further, students will understand their lessons better; at the same time infuse a sense of nationalism and they will also gain fluency in their L1. MTB-MLE benefit pupils because they easily understand their lessons and the learning skills of students can be easily achieved. The objective in lessons of the teachers can be achieved as pupils comprehend well. They can understand what the teacher is talking in front. They can give examples and interact well in discussion. Their self-esteem develops and confident to deal with the lessons. It is easy to the teacher to establish rapport among her pupils. We are also promoting nationalism because we use the native language rather than the foreign language. If there are benefits we get from this, there are also disadvantages. The implementation of MTB-MLE will demand more time to translate books into different dialects knowing that Tagalog is not the only dialect that Filipino people speak. In different areas in the Philippines, we use different dialects so it will take more time to study and translate it to our own dialect. I find it difficult to other pupils who are transferee .If they come from a school where they had different language use, they will find it hard because they need to adapt and study the dialect of that particular area in order to communicate. It will create confusion also on the side of the child due to different terms use. Example if a child came from Cebu then transferred to Iloilo. Cebuano’s language is different to Hiligaynon. So a child does not know the words to speak or might his/her classmates laugh at him/her. Maybe the child can speak words that had different interpretations to that certain place and could create misinterpretation. And also in Iloilo we have different languages use in every town. We have different versions of Hiligaynon. And every word has different meanings. It would cause misinterpretations and confusions. Because some words are easy but other words are very difficult to understand even it is in Mother Tongue. It is also difficult for those who are comfortable using English as their medium of instruction. They are used to speak and use English well so they could not comprehend well in the Mother Tongue. They become confuse what are the exact words to use when it is translated in Mother Tongue. And some pupils who studied their kindergarten from private schools whose instruction is on English will find difficulty interpreting the translation of the subjects in Hiligaynon because they are not used by it. Sometimes they could not get the instructions well. Their performances were affected of this language acquisition. Another problem with Mother Tongue is when children already familiarized with it, they will be poor in speaking English. They will less prioritize the use of it. They would only stick to mother tongue because it’s the only easiest language for them in order to communicate. Hope that all the programs that were implemented will pave way to an improved and quality education no matter what language should be use as an instruction. And all children will be given equal opportunity to avail the quality of education that the government offers. That will help to lessen non-readers and poor readers of the country. That Mother tongue will make the lessons easy for every child in recognizing and comprehend to lessons and stories. That they will learn to express their ideas well and eliminate illiteracy and become fast readers in the future.

Triangles on SAT Math Geometry Strategies and Practice Problems SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Triangle questions account for less than 10% of all SAT math questions. That being said, you still want to get those questions right, so you should be prepared to know every kind of triangle: right triangles, isosceles triangles, isosceles right triangles- the SAT could test you on any one of them. Since triangle problems only account for a small percent of the SAT math questions, you shouldn’t spend all of your study time on triangles. This article should be all you need to prepare you to tackle SAT triangle questions. I'll let you know the types of triangles that will show up on the SAT, their formulas, and the strategies you’ll need to apply when approaching a triangle question. I’ll also break down SAT math practice questions and explain how to knock triangle questions out of the park. What Are Triangles? First, let’s talk basics. A triangle is a flat figure made up of three straight lines that connect together at three angles. The sum of these angles is 180 °. Each of the three sides of a triangle is called a â€Å"leg† of the triangle, and the longest leg of a right triangle is called the â€Å"hypotenuse.† The angle opposite the hypotenuse will always be 90 °, the largest of the three angles. As we look at the many different types, you'll notice that many categories of triangles will be subsets of other categories of triangles and the definitions will continue to narrow. Special Triangles There are several different kinds of special triangles, all of which commonly appear on the SAT. In this section, we will define and describe all the different kinds of triangles you’ll see on the test. In the next section, we will go through all the formulas you’ll need to know for your SAT triangle problems, as well as how to use them. Equilateral Triangles An equilateral triangle is a triangle that has three equal legs and three equal angles. Though the leg measurements can be anything (so long as they are all equal), the angle measurements must all equal 60 °. Why? Because a triangle’s angles must always total 180 °, and ${180}/{3}=60$. Let's take a look at these types of triangles in action. NOTE: this question is a modified old SAT question in the style of the new SAT. In the figure above, triangle ABC is inscribed in the circle with center O and diameter AC. If $\ov{AB}=\ov{AO}$, what is the degree measure of∠ ABO? (A) 15 ° (B) 30 ° (C) 45 ° (D) 60 ° Answer Explanation: We are told that two of the side lengths of the circle are equal, and we must find an unknown angle, ∠ ABO. If you are familiar with your circles, then you know that any and all radii of a circle are equal. Lines $\ov{AO}$ and $\ov{OB}$ are both radii of the circle, so they must be equal. This means that all three legs of the circle BOA- lines $\ov {AO}$, $\ov {OB}$, and $\ov {BA}$- are equal. And we know that having three equal legs of a triangle means we have an equilateral triangle. We also know that equilateral triangles have three equal inner angles, all of which are 60 degrees. This means that angle ABO is 60 degrees. Our final answer is D, 60 °. Isosceles Triangles An isosceles triangle is a triangle in which two sides and two angles are equal. The sides opposite equal angles will always be equal, and the angles opposite equal sides will always be equal. This knowledge will often lead you to the correct answers for many SAT questions in which it seems you are given very little information. Answer Explanation: Since the question tells you that $180−z=2y$ and $y=75$, we know that $180−z=(2)(75)$ and solving that gives you $z=30$. If $z=30$, then each of the base angles of the isosceles triangle on the right must measure 75 °(${180−30}/{2}$). Therefore, the angle marked $x °$ is $180 °Ã¢Ë†â€™75 °=105 °$, and so the value of $x$ is 105. The answer is 105. Right Triangles A right triangle is a triangle in which one of the angles measures 90 ° (90 ° is a right angle). This means that the sum of the other two angles must be 90 ° as well since a triangle’s angles always add up to 180 °. Special Right Triangles There are many different kinds of right triangles and some are considered â€Å"special.† These are triangles that have set angles or side lengths and formulas to correspond with them. Understanding these types of triangles (and their formulas) will save you a significant amount of time on triangle questions. We'll go through the formulas that correspond to these types of triangles in the next section, but for now, let’s go through their definitions. Isosceles Right Triangle An isosceles right triangle is just what it sounds like- a right triangle in which two sides and two angles are equal. Though the side measurements may change, an isosceles triangle will always have one 90 ° angle and two 45 ° angles. (Why? Because a right triangle has to have one 90 ° angle by definition and the other two angles must add up to 90 °. So ${90}/{2}=45$. 30-60-90 Triangles A 30-60-90 triangle is a special right triangle defined by its angles. It is a right triangle due to its 90 ° angle, and the other two angles must be 30 ° and 60 °. It's also half of an equilateral triangle. As I mentioned earlier, an equilateral triangle has three equal angles all measuring 60 °. If you attached another 30-60-90 triangle to this one (along the leg opposite the 60 °), you'd have an equilateral triangle with all angles measuring 60 °. 3-4-5, and 5-12-13 Right Triangles 3-4-5 and 5-12-13 triangles are special right triangles defined by their side lengths. The numbers 3-4-5 and 5-12-13 describe the lengths of the triangle’s legs, meaning that, when you have a right triangle with one leg length 4 and with a hypotenuse length 5, then you automatically know that the third leg equals 3. Any consistent multiples of these numbers will also work the same way. So a right triangle could have leg lengths of: 3(1)-4(1)-5(1) = 3-4-5 3(2)-4(2)-5(2) = 6-8-10 3(3)-4(3)-5(3) = 9-12-15 And so on. These are considered â€Å"special† right triangles because all of their sides are integers. Recognize this handsome fellow? Because Pythagoras is here to impart his triangle wisdom. Triangle Formulas Now that you know what all your triangles will look like, let’s go through how to find missing variables and information about them. This is the box of formulas you will be given on every SAT math section. Though all the formulas you’ll need to know for triangles are all included, you must understand how and why these formulas work as well as when to use them. It will also save you time and effort to memorize these rather than flipping back and forth between the problem and the formula box. So memorize your formulas if possible and read below to see what these formulas mean and how to use them. All the formula boxes in the world aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on if you don’t know how to apply them when solving your problems. All Triangles Some formulas apply to all triangles while other formulas only apply to special triangles. So let's first look at the triangle formulas that apply to any and all types of triangles. Area $$a= {1}/{2}bh$$ b is the base of the triangle, which is the length of any one of the triangle’s legs. h is the height of a triangle, found by drawing a straight line (at a 90 ° angle) from the base of the triangle to the opposite angle from the base. This means that, in a right triangle, the height is the length of the leg that meets at a 90 ° angle to the base. In a non-right triangle, you must create a new line for your height. Perimeter p=l1+l2+l3 Just like with any other kind of plane geometry figure, the perimeter of a triangle is the sum of its outer sides (the triangle’s three legs). Right Triangles There are also formulas that apply to right triangles and to specific types of right triangles. Let's take a look. Pythagorean Theorem a2+b2=c2 The Pythagorean theorem allows you to find the side lengths of a right triangle by using the lengths of its other sides. a and b signify the shorter legs of the triangle while c is always the leg opposite the 90 ° angle (the hypotenuse). 3-4-5 and 5-12-13 triangles (and their multiples) are special because you do not need to work through the Pythagorean Theorem in order to find the side measures of the third length (though, of course, you always can). Remember, if one side of a right triangle is 8 and its hypoteneuse is 10, then you automatically know the third side is 6. Trigonometric Formulas: Sine and Cosine Trigonometry makes up less than 5% of all math questions, but you won't be able to answer any trigonometry questions correctly without knowing trigonometry formulas. Isosceles Right Triangle x, x, x√2 Though you can find the missing side lengths of an isosceles triangle using the Pythagorean theorem, you can also take a shortcut and say that the equal side lengths are each x, and the hypotenuse is $x√2$. Why does this work? Well, think about an isosceles triangle with a leg length of 6. We know the second leg must also equal 6 because the two legs are equal in an isosceles triangle. And we can also find the hypotenuse using the Pythagorean theorem because it is a right triangle. So: 62+62=c2 36+36=c2 72=c2 $$c = √72$$ $c = √36 * √2$ (Why were we able to split up our root this way? Check out our guide to SAT advanced integers and its section on roots if this process is unfamiliar to you.) $c = 6√2$ So, we are left with side lengths of 6, 6, and $6√2$. Or, in other words, our side lengths are x,x, and $x√2$. 30-60-90 Triangle $$x, x√3, 2x$$ Just like with an isosceles right triangle, a 30-60-90 triangle has side lengths that are dictated by a set of rules. Again, you can find these lengths with the Pythagorean theorem, but you can also always find them using the rule: $x, x√3, 2x$, where x is the side opposite 30 °, $x√3$ is the side opposite 60 °, and 2x is the side opposite 90 °. This knowledge can help you find the lengths of sides when given a more complex triangle problem. Studious!Dog is proud of your studiousness right now. (So much studious.) Typical Triangle Questions Let’s look at some of the standard types of question in each category. NOTE: the question examples provided are not from official SAT tests since the newly redesigned SAT doesn't start until March 2016. These questions have been taken from College Board new SAT practice tests or adapted from other College Board study materials for the new SAT. #1: Finding Missing Values Most triangle problems will fall into this category- you will be asked to find a missing angle, an area, a perimeter, or a side length (among other things) based on given information. Some of these questions will be more complicated than others, but the SAT will always provide you will enough information to solve a problem, so it’s up to you to put the clues together. Let’s walk through an example question of this type: Note: Figure not drawn to scale. In the figure above, line m is parallel to line n, line d is perpendicular to line n, and line e intersects line m and line n. What is the length of x? Answer Explanation: Since line d and line e intersect at C, ACB and ∠ DCE are vertical angles, and therefore they are equal in measure. Since line m is parallel to line n, ∠ DEC and ∠ CAB are alternate interior angles of parallel lines cut by a transversal, and so the measures of ∠ DEC and ∠ CAB are equal. By the angle-angle theorem, triangle ABC is similar to triangle EDC with vertices A, B, and C corresponding to vertices E, D, and C, respectively. Also, triangle EDC is a right triangle, so you can use either the Pythagorean theorem or your knowledge of 3-4-5 right triangles to find that the hypotenuse is 5. Since triangle ABC is similar to triangle EDC, the ratios of the lengths of corresponding sides of the two triangles are the same so ${CD}/{BC}={3}/{5}={DE}/{AB}={4}/{x}$. Solving for $x$, we get $3x=20$. Therefore, $x={20}/{3}$. #2: Ratios and (In)Equalities These kinds of questions will generally ask you to either find the ratios between parts of different triangles or will ask you whether or not certain sides or angles of triangles are equal or unequal. Answer Explanation: Angles ABE and DBC are vertical angles (meaning they are pairs of opposite angles made by two intersecting lines), and, therefore, they have the same measure. Since segment AE is parallel to segment CD, angles A and D are of the same measure by the alternate interior angle theorem. Since all angles are equal in triangles ABE and DBC, triangle ABE is similar to triangle DBC, with vertices A, B, and E matching up to vertices D, B, and C, respectively. Therefore, Solving this you get CB = 4, and so CE = CB + BE = 4 + 8 =12. #3: Multi-Shape or Shapes Within Shapes As you can see from earlier examples, some of the triangle problems on the SAT will involve multiple triangles (or other geometric shapes) combined together. This technique for presenting problems is designed to challenge your understanding of lines and angles as well as triangles. For these types of problems, you must use the information you are given and solve for more information down the line until you find exactly what you need. It’s essentially a domino effect of problem-solving. Answer Explanation: The question tells you that ∠ AEB and ∠ CDB have the same measure. Since ∠ ABE and ∠ CBD are vertical angles (meaning they are pairs of opposite angles made by two intersecting lines), they have the same measure. Triangle EAB is similar to triangle DCB because the triangles have two pairs of congruent corresponding angles (angle-angle criterion for similarity of triangles). Since the triangles are similar, the corresponding sides are in the same proportion: $${CD}/{x}={BD}/{EB}$$ Substituting the given values of 800 for CD, 700 for BD, and 1400 for EB in ${CD}/{x}={BD}/{EB}$ gives ${800}/{x}={700}/{1400}$ Therefore, $x={(800)(1400)}/{700}=1600$. The final answer is 1600. #4: Variables and Combination Variables Finally, triangle problems that involve multiple variables (or only variables) in both the problem and the answer are usually located somewhere in the last three questions of any SAT math section. This means they are some of the most challenging types of math problems for the majority of students. The good news is that there are many different ways to solve these types of problems and that a little time, organization, and creativity will almost always get you to your correct answer. Considering these kinds of problems involve multiple variables, it is probably a good idea to check out the strategy of plugging in numbers if you haven’t done so already. This is a great technique to use if you are hesitant about the geometry and/or the algebra, or simply if multiple integers bother you. Let’s take a look at an example problem of this type and the various methods of solving it. Which of the following expresses $z$ in terms of $x$ and $y$? (A) $2x+3y−180$ (B) $x+2y−180$ (C) $180−x−y$ (D) $360−2x−3y$ As you can see, this is a triangle problem that uses multiple variables and so is a bit complicated. Let’s look at all our options for solving the question: Solving Method 1: Plug in our own numbers On most any occasion in which you are given several variables in the question or in the answer options, a sure-fire technique you can use is the one of plugging in your own numbers. (For more on this strategy, check out our guide to plugging in numbers.) We are given the variables $x$ and $y$ and told to find $z$. So let us choose some values for $x$ and $y$ that seem appropriate and use them to find $z$. Let us just say that $x=60$ and $y=70$. Why those numbers? Why not! Because the angles of a triangle always add up to 180 °, we can find the missing values in our two bottom triangles by saying: $$180−60−70=50$$ This means we can also find the value of the missing angle in our top triangle because we know that a straight line must also equal 180 °. So: $$180−50−50=80$$ Which means we can finally find the value of z by saying that: $$z=180−80−70$$ $$z=30$$ Now, let us use the same values for $x$ and $y$ that we used in our problem to find which answer choice (or choices) gets us $z=30$. Answer choice A gives us: $$2x+3y−180$$ Which, when we replace our variables, is: $$2(60)+3(70)−180$$ $$120+210−180$$ $$150$$ We are looking for an answer to match $z=30$, so this is far too large. We can eliminate answer choice A. Let us try answer choice B: $$x+2y−180$$ $$60+2(70)−180$$ $$60+140−180$$ $$20$$ This answer still does not equal 30, so we can eliminate answer choice B. Answer choice C says: $$180−x−y$$ But we already know that this is 50 and not 30, as we used this equation to find the missing components of our triangles earlier (180−60−70). We can eliminate choice C. By process of elimination, answer choice D must be correct. But let us double-check to be sure. $$360−2x−3y$$ $$360−2(60)−3(70)$$ $$360−120−210$$ $$30$$ Success! We have found an answer choice (and only one answer choice) that matches what we found for $z$. Our final answer is D. Solving Method 2: Algebraic approach Alternatively, we could have found our answer using pure algebra and the properties of triangles, instead of filling in our own numbers. To do so, we would essentially be repeating the process we used to find our missing variables from above, but keeping the variables intact. Each of the three triangles we are focusing on would all add up to 180 °. We have three different triangles and three missing angles, so their equations would look like: $$180−x−y$$ $$180−x−y$$ $$180−y−z$$ We know that all of those equations will find us one of the three unmarked angles. We also know that those three angles add up to 180 °. (Why? Because they lie on a straight line, and a straight line equals 180 °.) So when we add the equations together and set them equal to 180 °, we get: $$(180−x−y)+(180−x−y)+(180−y−z)=180$$ $$540−2x−3y−z=180$$ $$−2x−3y−z=−360$$ $$−z=−360+2x+3y$$ $$z=360−2x−3y$$ So again, our final answer is D. (Note: there is a third- and even faster- way to solve this problem that involves quadrilaterals. Check out our guide to SAT polygons for more info!) Though there are many different types of triangle problems on the SAT, they tend to stand out from the crowd. How to Solve a Triangle Question Triangle questions are as numerous (comprising nearly 10% of the entire SAT math section) as they are varied. Because of this, it is difficult to break down one exact path for problem-solving triangle questions. That said, your greatest assets and strategies when solving triangle problems will be to: #1: Use Your Formulas (and Take Your Short-Cuts) Using your formulas is the absolute most crucial step for any triangle problem. And, considering that most of your formulas essentially act as short-cuts (why bother solving with the Pythagorean theorem when you know that the legs of a 30-60-90 triangle are $x, x√3, 2x$?), you will save yourself a great deal of time and energy when you can keep your formulas on hand and in order. #2: When Working With Multi-Shapes, Break It into Small Steps Remember that dealing with a multi-shape triangle problem is like working with dominoes. Each successive piece of information makes way for finding the next piece of information. Don’t get intimidated by the idea that you don’t have enough information or that there are too many shapes or lines to deal with. You will always have enough data to go on- just focus on finding one shape and one piece of information at a time, and the dominoes will fall into place. #3: Draw It Out Draw your own diagrams if you are given none. Draw on top of your diagrams when you are given pictures. Write in your givens and all the measurements you find along the way to your missing variable (or variables), and mark congruent lines and angles. The more you can clarify your diagrams, the less likely you’ll be to make careless errors in misplacing or confusing your numbers and equalities. #4: Plug in Your Own Numbers Whenever Possible Finally, give yourself a break from dealing with variables and complex algebra if you need to. It can be far too easy to make a mistake when dealing with variables alone, so if you have the time to spare, go for plugging in your own numbers! You have more information and strategies at your disposal than you think. Just keep them on hand and organized in your head and you'll be set. Test Your Knowledge Now let's test your triangle knowledge on more, SAT math problems. NOTE: these questions are not official SAT math section questions (since the newly redesigned SAT debuts in March 2016). These questions were taken from College Board practice tests for the new SAT or adapted from other new SAT practice questions and old SAT questions. 1) Note: Figure not drawn to scale. In the figure above, a regular polygon with 8 sides has been divided into 8 congruent isosceles triangles by line segments drawn from the center of the polygon to its vertices. What is the value of x? Answer Explanation: The sum of the measures of the angles around a point is 360 °. Since the 8 triangles are congruent, the measures of each of the 8 angles are the same. Therefore, the measure of each is ${360 °}/{8}=45 °$. In any triangle, the measure of the interior angles is 180 °. So in each triangle, the sum of the measures of the remaining two angles is $180 °-45 °=135 °$. Since the triangles are isosceles, the measures of the two angles are the same. Therefore, the measure of each of these angles is ${135 °}/{2}=67.5 °$. 2) Note: Figure not drawn to scale. In triangle ABC above, $AB=AC$, E is the midpoint of $\ov{AB}$, and D is the midpoint of $\ov{AC}$. If $AE = x$, and $ED = 4$, what is the length of BC? (A) 6 (B) 8 (C) $2x$ (D) $4x$ Answer Explanation: As always, let us first fill in our given information. Now, though it may not look it, we are told that E is the midpoint of line AB. This means that, if segment AE is worth $x$, then segment EB is also worth $x$. This also means that the entire length AB will, therefore, be worth $x+x=2x$. So let us set up a proportion. Leg AE will be to its base, ED, as the leg AB will be to its base, BC. So: $${AE}/{ED}:{AB}/{BC}$$ $${x}/{4}:{2x}/{BC}$$ $$8x=BCx$$ $$8=BC$$ Our final answer is B, BC = 8. 3) Note: Figure not drawn to scale. Two isosceles triangles are shown above. When one examines this, it takes but a moment to realize that most people strive to live above and beyond their meaner. For instance, that shiny new vehicle that came with payments that can barely be scraped together every month, was viewed as a necessity when it was purchased rather than the luxury it really is. Another point of fact is the extremely nice and prominent new home that thousands of people build each year has payments so enormously high that it takes nearly all of their monthly income to make the monthly aments. Many times people have misunderstood what is real and what is not real in life, thereby creating a false sense of security that eventually has destructive consequences. But the lure of having the best of the best for all to observe, in reality, clouds the Judgment and thereby causes much personal distress and financial destruction. In modern times, this is often referred to as keeping up with the Joneses. For most people being known in ones community as beautiful, charismatic, interesting, and wealthy is often ingrained very deep in the recesses of he human mind and the character, Nathalie, in the short story, The Necklace written by Guy De Unpleasant, is certainly no exception. In The Necklace, the author has very quickly painted the character of Madame Nathalie as a very unhappy woman because of her position in society, her desire to be above the common people, accepted and admired among the titled, and her love and lack of riches. The author tells a story of a woman born into a family of clerks, with no dowry to offer and therefore no meaner of ever being wed to a rich and distinguished gentleman, and she let herself to be married too little clerk (68). Mr De Unpleasant also states that Madame Nathalie suffers ceaselessly from the poverty of her dwelling; she is depicted as tortured and angry because she feels that she was born for all the delicacies and luxuries (68). He further describes Madame Mediated as having no dresses nor Jewels and that she loved nothing but that. He tells us that Madame Mediated would so have liked to please, to be envied, to be charming, and to be sought after (68). We also learn that Madame Mediated had a friend that was rich, and whom she did not like to go see anymore because she suffered so much when she came back (68). Madame Nathalie is so preoccupied with who she wants to be and the life style of the rich and titled among her that she has come to love nothing and no one. Her life has seized to exist in any normal fashion as she is totally fixated on what she does not have that she has failed to see how blessed she truly is. Madame Mediated has become so lost in her own world of have-onto that she rejects her friend and has stopped visiting her because Madame Jeanne is wealthy. Madame Mediated has actually quit visiting her friend because she feels the stark truth of her reality upon returning to her own home. It appears that Madame Mediated is Jealous f her friends wealth to the point that she actually dislikes her. In any event, one would have to assume that Madame Mediated is most certainly allowing her love for wealth direct her heart in the matter of her friendship with Madame Jeanne. Madame Matisses husband appears to be content with what he has in life as he is dinner. Mr Eloise uncovered the soup tureen and declared with an enchanted air, ah, the good pot-AU-fee! I dont know anything better than that (68). Mediated cant keep herself from dreaming of riches, not even at the dinner table, the author tells us that she thought of dainty dinners, of shining silverware (68). She thought of delicate dishes served on marvelous plates, and of the whispered gallantries which you listen to with a sphinxes smile, while you are eating the pink flesh of a trout or the wings of a quail (68). Mediated is portrayed as a person who obviously has a deep-rooted love of money and all the material things that accompanies it, to the point that it has consumed her thoughts and actions from within. While Madame Matisses husband is so proud of the stew that he is served, Madame Mediated feels she should be served rich and fancy meals on a silver platter with real silver adorning the table while tinting among the aristocrats and lords. Madame Mediated has engulfed herself in a non-existent world and feels slighted because she was born into a family of commoners. It is very likely that Madame Mediated will destroy herself and her husband with her deep seated dreams of being rich. Madam Mediated seems to have lost her grip on reality because she seems to hate her life to the point that she is suffering severe unhappiness due to the lack of wealth. Madame Matisses husband attempts to bring her happiness when he secures a highly sought after invitation to a party at the palace of the Ministry. The Invitations were issued to very few clerks and all the upper class was to attend this party. But instead of Mediated being delighted, as her husband had hoped, she threw the invitation on the table with disdain (69). Even as her husband gives up his planned purchase of a gun and his savings to buy her a new dress she still isnt happy. She begins to become uneasy and anxious because she is annoyed that she doesnt have a single Jewel, not a single stone, nothing to put on. I shall look like distress. I should almost rather not go at all (69). Whereas Matisses husband suggests she wear flowers, however, she was not invoiced. No; theres nothing more humiliating than to look poor among other women who are rich, at which time her husband suggests she ask her friend Madame Jeanne Forrester, to lend her some Jewels (70). At this point Madame Mediated is more concerned about how the wealthy party attendees would view her above all else. It is very important to Madame Mediated to appear to be wealthy to others at the party. Money cannot buy happiness and neither can anything one purch ases with money add one iota to who you are on the inside. She never appeared to give any thought to spending a lovely and fun filled night at the party with her husband. Her thoughts were totally consumed and controlled by her desire for riches. One of Madame Matisses worst fears is to appear poor. It never occurred to her that she is her own worst enemy and she will be the cause of her own poverty. It obviously never occurs to her to question why she feels the way she does when it comes to money and power. Had she analyzed or stopped to think about why she is so attracted to wealth, she may have avoided the awful existence that soon came. Madame Mediated has decided that she cannot attend the ball with no Jewels to wear, her husband then suggests she ask Madame Jeanne to lend her some. So taking her husband suggestion, Mediated visits her friend Madame Jeanne Forrester and explains her distress at not having any Jewels and asks her to lend her some Jewels. Madame her heart began to beat with an immoderate desire. Her hands trembled as she took it. She fastened it around her throat, outside of her high-necked dress, and remained lost in ecstasy at the sight of herself (70). The day of the ball arrived and Madame Mediated Eloise made a great success, she was prettier than them all, elegant, smiling, gracious, and crazy with Joy. All the men looked at her, asked her name, endeavored to be introduced. All the attaches of the Cabinet wanted to waltz with her. She was remarked by the Minister himself. She danced with intoxication, with passion, made drunk with pleasure, forgetting all, in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success (70) Madame Mediated was living her ultimate dream and the despairing fragments of true reality was nothing more than a distant memory lost long ago in another world. As reality always does, it came sweeping in at about four oclock in the morning when it was time to leave (70). Her husband threw over her shoulders the wraps which he had bought, modest wraps of common life, whose poverty entreated with the elegance of the ball dress. She felt this and wanted to escape so as not to be remarked by the other women, who were enveloping themselves in costly furs (70) Once again as she hastily left her dream life, she instantly became sad and unhappy. All was ended, for her (71). Madame Mediated fears being looked upon as poor so much that she immediately begins to worry about what people will think of her if they observe her wearing common clothing. She has not a worry for neither her own nor her husbands health as she rushes into the freezing cold morning without a warm taxi awaiting them. Madame Mediated was willing to risk both of their well-being to keep up her well laid appearances of the previous night. She is unwilling that anyone see her clothed in anything less than what she considered perfect, after all, appearances of wealth is all that Madame Mediated loves. Appearances is very important in her world. Madame Mediated immediately became unhappy as she was leaving the ball because she was leaving her coveted dream world. For once in her young life, she has lived the way she has dreamed of all her life. Just the thought of leaving that life, no matter how brief it was, became so overwhelming to her that she t once hated her old life with a passion so deep that it caused immediate sadness. In her sadness Madame Mediated momentarily lost sight of how beautiful she looks in her new ball gown and how sophisticated she looks wearing the diamond necklace. The necklace is soon to take control of her life in a way that she nor her husband would have never dreamed possible. Upon arriving home she discovers that she has lost Madame Foresters necklace. Madame Mediated is so stunned over losing the necklace that she Just sits there without doing anything for several hours. She is now ginning to realize that what she had loved more than anything else in her life was becoming a living nightmare. After searching extensively for a week to locate the lost necklace, Mr Eloise goes about borrowing money to purchase a replacement necklace to return to Madame Forrester. The replacement necklace cost 36000 francs; Mr Eloise used all of his inheritance and borrowed from loan sharks and illegal lenders to secure the funds to replace the necklace. At which point he and Mediated began working extremely long hours and very difficult Jobs to pay the loans back. Madame Mediated Eloise now knew the horrible existence of the needy. She took her part, moreover, all of a sudden, with heroism. They dismissed their servant, they took them ten long years to repay all the debts, at which time Madame Mediated appearance had drastically changed, she looked old now. Gone was the beauty of ten years ago and in its place she had become a woman of impoverished households, strong and hard and rough (72). Ironic that poverty had taken its toll on her due to her own love of the riches and Jewels that she so coveted. Madame Mediated vowed to help repay that debt incurred because of her love of riches. One can assume by Madame Matisses actions that she has realized the folly of her prior actions and thoughts. Her days are now spent with long hours of heavy labor. The deep lines etched upon her face and calloused on the palms of her hands tells the story of the toil and depressing poverty that had become her life during the years of repayment. She gave up her preoccupation with what she didnt have and day dreaming of what might have been and replaced them with the reality of the commoner. The author now tells us that Madame Mediated has a chance meeting with Madame Forrester hill taking a walk one day. Madame Mediated decides on the spot to tell Madame Forrester about the lost necklace and the replacement that both she and Mr Eloise worked ten long hard years to pay off, only to be told in the end that the necklace wasnt real at all! It was fake, Just Paste, not worth more than 500 francs (73). At times people learn the hard way that appearances are deceiving and very little is actually what it appears to be. It is perfectly acceptable and honorable to want a better life and obtain wealth, nevertheless, it is not smart to live ones life in anger ND unhappiness, nor to allow Jealousy and greed to control ones life. Madame Mediated learns that she has worked her whole life in a fake world made real only by her thoughts which turned her beliefs toward Jealousy, envy, and discontent with what she had before she lost the necklace. The Lesson that Madame Mediated has learned as she stands there in front of Madame Forrester is that she has caused them serious and real poverty for what she deemed to be real and admirable, was in fact fake and Just an illusion, not all things are what they appear to be. One decision can change ones whole life.
